We are very excited to announce the launch of our new Family Mediation Service in Leeds designed to help couples find a better way forward. Separation or divorce can be an incredibly difficult and stressful experience, and we are committed to helping separated families find solutions to issues that arise following a family breakdown in a safe and non-confrontational manner. Our new Mediation Service offers a calmer, more constructive alternative to going to court and it gives couples the opportunity to talk through their issues in the presence of a qualified mediator who is there to help you explore different options and support you in reaching an outcome which you consider will work for your family going forward.
The decisions are yours to make, but we will work together and assist you to find solutions that work for you and your family.
What is Family Mediation and what can it help you achieve?
Family Mediation is a process which helps you resolve the issues that arise on the breakdown of your relationship, including divorce, children, finances and property. Mediation allows you to make importation decisions about matters that affect you, without the involvement of a court. The process is voluntary and confidential and puts the needs of children and young people first.
Family Mediation can provide:
- A safe, neutral environment to discuss things that matter to you;
- An organised and constructive process;
- A range of options for you to explore;
- A lasting agreement for the future; and
- An end to arguments and disagreements
In mediation, you take responsibility for decisions and work together to find solutions that work for you and which are in the best interests of the children. Your mediator will assist you to reach those decisions but will not make decisions for you. Unlike the court process, the power rests with you. The process is impartial, informal and constructive, focusing on the future and finding tailor-made solutions. Even if feel that you are in a high conflict situation, “shuttle” mediation may be an option, avoiding face to face discussions but still allowing you to find the answers. Mediation can help improve future relationships.
Mediation is also likely to avoid the stress of the court process and can save you time and money.
Who would carry out the Mediation?
Our Family Mediation Service is headed by Sam Haslam, a Senior Solicitor and a long-standing member of our team. She qualified as a Solicitor in 1999 and has practised solely in family law in both Leeds and Harrogate since then. Having qualified as a Mediator in 2024, Sam is now working towards accreditation with the Family Mediation Council.
Sam is experienced in a wide range of issues but with particular emphasis on financial arrangements and child related issues arising on separation and divorce. She brings her experience of dealing with these family related issues to her mediation practice, helping clients to find practical and child focused solutions. Sam offers both in-person mediation at our office in Leeds and virtual appointments to suit your schedule.
